The objective of this week's lab was to create and later the symbology of maps in ArcGIS, to examine files using ArcCatalog and to compare and contrast raster and vector data files.
Illustrated below are this week's maps and process summary.
MAP 1: MEXICO STATES
MAP 2: MAP WITH DIFFERENT LAYERS
MAP 3: ELEVATION MAP
Process Summary Description
· Copy from the r:drive to the s:drive, this week’s folder, GISCartography.
· Unzip file.
· Open ArcCatalog and Navigate to the GISCartography folder.
· Switch tab at top of viewing pane from “Contents” to” Preview”
· To answer question #1 in process summary (PS) –“ How Many Columns and rows does the mex_elev raster have?”
o Right click/double click on mex_elev on Catalog Tree >see column “Value” and specifically row adjacent to “Columns and Rows”.
· To answer question #2 in PS – “Can you edit the properties or data type of an existing field?”
o Right-click Mex_Roads under catalog tree >Fields Tab> attempt to delete or alter the values
CREATING MAP 1 (Save Periodically)
· Open ArcMap > Minimize window so can see ArcCatalog Window > Drag and Drop the “World_Countries” shapefile from ArcCatalog into ArcMap.
· Drag and Drop in same way; “Mex_boundary” and “Americas_Admin” shapefiles.
· To Create a Shapefile with only features within Mexico:
o Drag “MEX_Boundary” to the top layer under ArcMap
o Right click on “MEX_Boundary”>open Attributes>Select by attributes> For Layer Choose “Americas_Admin”>Confirm options under Method reads, “Create New Selection”.
o Under list of fields scroll down to “CNTRY_NAME” and double click to add > Click “=” button > Click “Get Unique Values” > double click “Mexico” to add statement.
o Click “Verify” to ensure that the statement syntax is valid > Message appears letting you know it is verified > hit “Apply”
· To answer question #3 in PS – “How many administrative divisions are selected” see summary of records selected in attributes table.
· To create New Layer > Right click “Americas_Admin” under TOC > data> export data > check that it reads “Selected features” in Export drop down menu > Keep the “this layer’s source data” checked >Browse Folder Icon to find your GISCartography folder and rename new shapefile from “Export_Output” to “Mex_states” >select “shapefiles” under Save As Type > OK > Uncheck “Americas_Admin” layer
· To Label the layers>Select World_Countries>properties>labels tab>check box next to “label features in this layer”>check that “CNTRY_NAME” appears in the Label Field Box>click on the “symbol” box to change the Font/Symbol to 12 and Country 2>Select OK both times>Apply
· To change name from “Mex _states” to “Mexico States”>double click on Mex_States>Select General Tab/Layer Name>Replace “Mex _states” with “Mexico States”>OK
· To label the individual states >right click Mexico States>properties>Label Features
· To change fill color and outline width>right click World_countries>Symbology>Symbol>select Orange>Outline width – 2>OK
· Change Symbology of Mexico states >properties>symbology>Quantities>Graduated Colors>Value = POP-ADMIN>Normalization = None>Select Color under Color Ramp (green to red)>Class = 6 >Keep classification as Natural Breaks>OK
· Layout view>switch to landscape orientation>Add essential Map elements: North Arrow, Scale Bar (in Kilometers), Scale Text (1cm =125km), Title, Legend, Author, Date
· In formatting Legend>right click legend >Frame>1.0 border>Apply>Gap = 4>OK. Be sure to remove the “legend” term by unchecking the box and also changing the word “POP_ADMIN” to “Population”.
· To focus only on the Mexico States>Uncheck all other layers and keep it to just the Mexico States layer.
· Save file as “GisCarto_map1_AK.Mxd”.
· Export File to a .jpeg map saved under the same name just a different file extension.
· Archive
CREATING MAP 2 (Save Periodically)
· Create copy of File “GisCarto_map1_AK.Mxd” so have a copy in case you need to go back to the original copy.
· Minimize ArcMap so able to see ArcCatalog Window.
· Drag and add layers: mex_rails, mex_rivers, mex_roads, mex_urban>turn off Mexico States
· To make Map more readable – select only a few features to display: mex_rivers>Properties>Symbology>Categories>Unique Values> Choose “RANK” in values field>Add Values button >Hold Control and select “Primary” and “Major” to add both >Uncheck box next to “all other values> double click on line symbols for both and update: Symbol style = river, color = blue, line width = 1 for both only a darker blue for the Primary rivers.
o To change name mex_rivers to “Rivers”> properties>General> Layer Name – type in Rivers > OK
o To change the Heading label from “RANK” to “Rivers”: properties>Symbology>click on row with <Heading> to highlight. Click on Term “Rank” under label column and type over “Rivers”>OK
· Update roads feature: mex_roads>properties>symbology>categories>unique values> select ”Authority” under Value field >select “Federal” under Add Values button>Double click on line symbol and update: Symbol Style = Major road, color = black, line width = 1.50>OK
o To change name mex_roads to “Roads”> properties>General> Layer Name – type in Roads > OK
o To change the Heading label from “Authority” to “Highways”: properties>Symbology>click on row with <Heading> to highlight. Click on Term “Authority” under label column and type over “Highways”>OK
· Mex_rails> properties>symbology>categories>unique values> select ”TYPE” under Value field >select “Single Track” under Add Values button>Double click on line symbol and update: Symbol Style = Railroad color = purple, line width = 4>OK
o To change name mex_rails to “Railroads”> properties>General> Layer Name – type in Railroads > OK
o To delete the Heading label from “TYPE” >properties>Symbology>click on row with <Heading> to highlight. Click on Term “TYPE” under label column and then hit the delete key>OK
· Mex_urban> properties>symbology>Symbol>Update features; Fill color = Mars red, Outline width = 2, Outline color = black> OK
o To change name mex_urban to “Urban Areas”> properties>General> Layer Name – type in Urban Areas > OK
· To label mex_urban> properties>labels>check box to label features in this layer>from drop down menu select “define classes of features and label each class differently as the method.”>Find “Add”button> Enter “Million” for new class name>Go back and select default for class name>uncheck box adjacent to “Label features in this class box”>SQL Query button>double click “POPULATION”>click “>” button>type in 1000000>verify>hit OK each of the 3 times it appears
· To make Convert Labels to Annotations: right click mex_urban > select convert labels to annotations > Store Annotation = In the map, keep rest as default > press convert>.
· To change properties of an annotation: Use Find Tool and type in “Distrito Federal” > select Find, and follow steps on page 12 – Points 2 to 12 in this week’s GIS Cartography Laboratory Instructions.
· To Create an Insert Map: Pg 13 of the GIS Cartography Laboratory Instructions.
· Save as GISCarto_map2_AK.mxd
· Export as GISCarto_map2_AK.jpg to the GISCartography folder.
CREATING MAP 3 (Save Periodically)
· To create an elevation Map: Pg 15 of the GIS Cartography Laboratory Instructions.
· Begin by dragging into ArcMap from ArcCatalog, the file mex_elev.
· When unchecking all layers, leave “World_countries” under the new data frame unchecked.
· For this map, went with black/gray color ramp as it best shows the different elevations.
· Checked to see that all map elements were still intact and were modified to fit this map.
· Save as GISCarto_map3_AK.mxd
· Export as GISCarto_map3_AK.jpg to the GISCartography folder.
This particular lab took about 6 hours to complete.
