PROCESS SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

·         Download and unzip file for the week
·         Open ArcMap > Display AcrCatalog Pane> Navigate to Projection Part I Folder>rightclick cntband shapefile to view properties>review xy coordinate system tab
·         Right click and drag “cntbnd” shapefile to ArcMap to add
·         Open up “Layers” data frame properties and coordinate system tab.  Notice is the same projection information as the cntbnd shapefile properties
USING PROJECT TOOL

·   Click on ArcToolbox icon
·   Expand Data Management Toobox>Expand Projection and Transformation>Expand Features>Double click to open Project>input dataset = “cntbnd”>output dataset = “cntbnd_utm16”>click icon by output coordinate system to access spatial reference properties>choose “select”>double click project coordinate systems>double click UTM>double click NAD 1983
·   Select “NAD 1983 UTM Zone 16N” and click “Add”>Ok to close spatial reference box.
·   Geographic Transformation Drop-down menu> select “NAD 1983 To HARN Florida”
·   Drag and add new “cntbnd_utm16” layer to ArcMap document>get error message from Geographic Coordinate System Window.
·   Close Window and Save Map.
Comparing Projection Visually
·   Insert>data frame>repeat to insert 2 new layers in ArcMap
·   Rename original layer “Albers” and rename the 2 new layers “UTM” and “State Plane N”>Properties>General>Name
·   Drag and drop “cntbnd_utm16” into UTM dataframe and remove from Albers dataframe
·   Switch back and forth (right click each to activate) between Albers and UTM to see difference between the county boundary layer displayed.
·   Open project tool>add 3rd layer – “cntbnd_stateplane”>Use same input ie. “cntbnd” and repeat above process>drag and add to state plane N layer
·   Save
·   Open “cntbnd” (under albers data frame) attribute table>table options>add field>type “Area” under field name>select “Short Integer” as type>ok>right click area column heading>select “calculate geometry”>select Yes in Warning box>select “Area” for properties>check “Use coordinate system of the data source> units =square miles>OK
·   Repeat above for “cntbnd_utm16” and “cntbnd_stateplane”> DID NOT WORK
·   Posted to Help Conference> Suggestions offered did not help>unable to complete this step so moved to next step
·   Save Map
ACTIVATE LAYER
·         To select layers use find tool and use this for all data frames to select, Miami-Dade, Polk, Escambia and Alachua counties.
