GIS3015l – WEEK 5 – MAP COMPOSITION AND ORGANIZATION

This week’s lab was continued work in Adobe Illustrator.  In the lab, we were tasked with creating a map soley in Adobe Illustrator.  Presented below are this week's map and process summary.

Process Summary Description
·         Read through laboratory instructions and watch the 3 videos before beginning lab
·         Log into eDesktop
·         Copy and paste folder “Cartographic Design” from R:drive to S:drive > unzip
·         Open up Adobe Illustrator>Open up file “Florida_hispanic_ai”
·         Save
·         Open up Layers to begin work:  windows>layers
·         Group so easy to move, North Arrow and Legends: Click to highlight layer of choice>Object>Group
·         Save
·         Using Selection tool, drag and move around maps for best fit>Make the choropleth map of southern Florida bigger as this is the focus of the lab>click on map>boundary box appears>drag to resize and click, hold and drag to move.
EXPERIMENT WITH COLORS
·         Double on county and then select from the control panel the color to change to> shift click to get customized color panel.
INSERT NEATLINE
·         Begin by fixing the units: Edit>preferences>units>General = inches> Stoke = points> Type = points
·         Then click on rectangular tool once>click anywhere in document>change dimensions: width = 9 inches>Height = 7 inches >Ok
·         If neatline shows up with fill; remove fill by using fill box on control panel and changing to no fill.
·         Drag Neatline to enclose map elements
·         Add second neatline by the Florida Map>repeat above process to add a neatline>resize to make smaller>drag and insert United States Map into same box as Florida Map>Using line tool draw line pointing to choropleth map for viewer to know what the choropleth map is part of the Florida Map
OTHER ESSENTIAL MAP ELEMENTS
·         Move North arrow to top right hand corner of map
·         Place legends by choropleth map and resize so legible
·         Using text tool insert; Map title, author and source information and scale text
·         Save map
·         Export Map to JPEG file
·         Open up JPEG file and if border is off compared to neatline, drag to resize then save.
·         Archive documents; turn into drop box and post on blog.
