Process Summary Description
· Log into ArcGIS
· File Download (cntbnd_jun11 and cities_feb04)
· Open new map in ArcMap
· Add data > right click layer > add data > go to location of zipped files > Add >change to layout view > change page setup to landscape > drag map to fill area
· Add Neatline: Inside Margin Gap = 10, Border = 2.0 point, Drop Shadow = Grey 60% and Background = Sepia.
· Save Map > Adobe Illustrator Map_AK.mxd
· Select globe symbol to bring map view to Full Extent
· Insert Scale Bar: alternating scale bar with whole number increments
· Insert Legend: Border = 1.0 point, Gap = 5 for both X and Y, Background = Grey 10%, Gap = 5 for both X and Y, Drop Shadow = None. Remove Term “Legend”
· Change Names in Legend>right click cities_feb04 >properties >General >type in “cities” under layer name > OK
· Repeat for cntbnd_jun11 to “County Boundaries”
· Save Map
· Insert North Arrow: ESRI North3
· Insert Scale Text: inches = miles
· Save Map
· Insert Title: “FLORIDA CITIES AND COUNTY BOUNDARIES” - Arial/18/Bold and center on map
· Insert Author/Source/Date: see map – Arial/10/Bold/Center
· Save Map
· Export Map as Al (x.ai). (check that the file is saved in the correct folder for the week)
PART 2
· Open map in illustrator
· Select “Update” when you get error message
· Fit map to screen – see menu at bottom of window
· Open up layers window > Windows > Layers
· Begin by renaming the neatline layer at bottom of window > double click box > rename to “Neatline” and change color to Magenta
· Create 2 new layers > click icon by trash can
· Double click each layer (click on the box) > Rename > Change color for each (Legend and North Arrow)
· Click to select layer North Arrow layer and drag to move to topmost layer in the layers window
· Move Legend layer to just below this
· Click on and expand layer titled “Other 3”. Then expand “Groups”
· Drag and move out of this layer and into the respective layers all legend and north arrow items
· NOTE: The order in which you position the legend items will affect their visibility on the map. Check that they are placed in the order shown
o Cities icon
o Cities legend name
o County Boundaries icon
o County Boundaries legend name
o Outline
o Background
· Double click to rename “Other 3” to “Scale Bar”
· Expand “Cities” to see groups and the same for “County Boundaries”
· Move cities <group> to immediately below county boundaries <group> right under “clipping path”
· Move scale bar <group> to immediately above cities <group> and immediately below country boundaries <group>
· Update names. Double click group under cities and rename “cities group”
· Repeat for group under scale bar to rename as “scale bar group” and group under county boundaries to rename as “cities/counties/scale”
· Delete empty layers – Other 2, Cities and Scale Bar >click to select then drag to trash can
· Check that the layers are properly grouped using the direct selection tool. Click on any Florida county > bounding box appears > drag box to resize > it should resize entire Florida map, scale bar and city layer.
· Experiment with adding text to the map using the typing Tool – see lab instructions.
· Export map > save as jpeg > file – save for web and devices > save as a Jpeg and accept all defaults for now
· Archive file
